Immigration Resources

Immigration is a long journey. Even just locating the information you need to get started can be a complicated task. Below we have listed some resources we feel may be helpful to you if you are just starting out. If you are ready to file a visa petition or if you are facing emergency issues such as deportation or asylum, or if you just have some questions about how to get started on your immigration journey, contact the Law Offices of Meri S. Ponist, P.C., at 212-219-7626 or 212-619-0865 to speak with a skilled and experienced U.S. immigration attorney.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

USCIS is the official website for all information related to U.S. citizenship, immigration processes, and services. This website is useful for accessing forms, checking case statuses, and reviewing immigration policies. You can also find information here about which countries have been designated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), eligibility requirements, where and when to file, etc.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

The ICE portal is for any noncitizen placed in deportation (removal) proceedings. It contains important details regarding court hearings and appointments, as well as a way to locate a loved one currently in detention.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

DHS was created in 2002 and combines the functions of 22 different federal departments and agencies into one cabinet-level agency. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and U.S. Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS) all fall under the DHS umbrella, as well as other agencies and departments that touch upon U.S. immigration law and policy.

Bureau of Consular Affairs

The Bureau of Consular Affairs is the arm of the State Department that issues visas, passports and other travel documents so that immigrants and visitors may lawfully travel to the U.S. You will also find the Visa Bulletin here, with important information regarding the availability of different immigrant visas and the cut-off dates for applications.

U.S. Embassy

Use the U.S. Embassy Locator to find contact information and services provided by U.S. embassies and consulates around the world. Useful for visa applications, passport services, consular processing and emergency assistance.

Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)

The EOIR adjudicates immigration cases. On their website you can find information regarding immigration court operations, including case status, appeals, and legal resources. There are about 700 immigration judges located in 71 immigration courts and three adjudication centers around the country. Well over ten percent of all immigration judges are located in six immigration courts in New York State, including nearly 70 judges in New York City at the Broadway Immigration Court and the Federal Plaza Immigration Court. Immigration courts are overseen by the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is in charge of border security in the U.S., keeping terrorists and weapons out of the country while facilitating lawful international travel and trade. The CBP website provides information on border security, entry requirements, and trusted traveler programs.

American Immigration Council

The American Immigration Council is a nonprofit organization that provides research, analysis, and advocacy on immigration issues. Useful for policy updates, legal resources and the latest news on the constant shifts in immigration law and policy.

National Visa Center (NVC)

Once your petition is approved by USCIS, it is sent to the National Visa Center for processing. The NVC will request your application fee and hold all documentation while your visa interview is pending. Their website provides helpful information on the processing of immigrant visa applications and consular processing steps. Vital for individuals in the final stages of visa processing.

Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA)

The BIA hears your appeal from an adverse decision rendered by an immigration judge. Here you can find details on the appeals process for immigration cases, including decisions, procedures, and filing information.

U.S. Department of State (DOS)

The State Department visa website provides abundant resources and information regarding immigrant and nonimmigrant visas. Excellent resource for information on visa types, eligibility, and application procedures.

U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS) Case Status

Use the USCIS case status tool to check the status of your USCIS case online, providing real-time updates on your application or petition.
